At 48, Ann Muthee Wangechi is a testament to the enduring spirit of Othaya’s tea farmers. Despite personal losses and life’s unpredictabilities, Ann’s focus remains on the lush tea fields her grandparents established over five decades ago. With Kwara, she’s not just preserving a legacy but also setting the stage for the future.
Family, Legacy, and Perseverance
Ann’s journey in Othaya is intertwined with her family’s legacy and the land she cherishes. “This land has seen my grandparents, my parents, and now me,” she mentions. But while the farm stands strong, personal losses have made the journey challenging. The passing of her husband two years ago brought overwhelming grief, but her resolve to persevere never wavered.
Today, Ann’s farm is a source of sustenance for her family, including her son, his wife Gladys, and their young children, Ann and James. Her expertise in tea farming has been augmented by innovative farming methods, like planting napier grass to ensure the soil’s fertility.
Saving Valuable Time with Kwara
Having been with Nyeri South SACCO since 2015, Ann has seen their growth and innovation. “From 50 of us in the beginning, we’ve grown to a hundred now,” she beams.
The inclusion of Kwara two years ago further enhanced her experience. “The trainers made it so simple,” she recalls. With just a basic phone, Ann now manages her finances with unprecedented ease. Loan applications, payments, and balance checks have become hassle-free. “One of the best things about Kwara is that it makes it easier to make payments. The payments that I make now goes straight into my account. It used to take time. Now I can see my balance change immediately.” she emphasizes.
Ann’s reliance on Kwara is evident as she navigates the intricacies of modern farming. Loans accessed through Kwara help her in land improvement, ensuring continued productivity.

Dreams of Tomorrow
While content with her achievements, Ann’s dreams extend to the next generation. “I completed my primary education, my children finished high school, but for my grandchildren, I envision university degrees,” she asserts, with a special hope for a doctor in the family.
Ann’s feedback for Kwara is both appreciation and aspiration. She wants the platform to evolve, offering even more banking services that larger banks provide. “Kwara makes everything more efficient. It saves me time and time is money. And I know that I am not the only one. Everyone in Nyeri South likes the app. But we want Kwara to continue to make it better. Customers of big banks have access to even more services. We want those services too.”
